A Poem from OF COWS AND CROWS manuscript (currently in review with a publisher)

THE GRASS IS GREENER (first published in The Talking Stick)

cows lowered heads

between bottom strands

of barbed wire

bent front legs

to kneel in prayer

to the god of the other

side of the fence

their tongues stretched

and curled toward the grace

of green tendrils

as if they could be saved

by such decadence

Swan

Today I am
an origami swan
folding into myself,
wanting nothing
of the world
but solitude -
the turning
of pages,
a leaf
airborne,
a wakeless
drifting
to another shore.
